I produced this assignment sequence to demonstrate what might occur in my classroom on a day to day basis. This sequence moves students from summary to analysis as they look at recent writings about mothers in the workforce, including Anne Marie Slaughter's article, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All." An additional element of this sequence asks students to write their analysis within the genre of the review (for example, the many reviews of Slaughter's article after it's publication such as this one). As a class, the students read reviews, discuss the common features they see, and create a list of elements that a review should have. The sequence also asks students to reflect on their final product and discuss how recognizing genre can help them practically adapt to different writing environments.
