In first grade I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Subsequent dream professions included anthropologist, astronaut, and (more realistically) a museum educator. Now, years later, I know that my first grade self was right; I am excited about teaching and look forward to beginning a career in education. Originally from the great state of Minnesota, I am currently completing a Masters degree in English at Georgetown University where I’ve come to love the Mid-Atlantic. At Georgetown I’ve had outstanding opportunities to explore both theory and praxis. In classes such as “Approaches to Teaching Writing” and “The Rhetorical Turn” I crafted assignment sequences and thought about how to create a composition classroom where writing matters to students. And as a participant in Georgetown’s “Apprenticeship in Teaching Program” I’ve attended various workshops and completed authentic teaching tasks in order to become a better teacher. The more I learn, the more I look forward to sharing my understanding of language and literature with students so they can create their own insights and feel confident when they read and write.

My primary areas of interest are rhetoric and composition, pedagogy, nineteenth century literature. I graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2010 where I majored in Comparative Literature and minored in Italian.

My Capstone synthesizes and expands on the work that I have completed at Georgetown. It is both an expansion and a reflection of the projects that were most important to me as a graduating student. Specifically, my capstone explores the connections between writing, reading, and new media.

I currently work as a Teaching Assistant in Georgetown's School of Continuing Studies. This job has provided a great opportunity to learn more about teaching, running workshops, and helping students improve their writing.

While at Georgetown I've had great opportunities to participate to a complete teacher training program, participate in a workshop about veterans, and volunteer at a local high school.
