Although  individual assignments vary from syllabus to syllabus, every first year student writes a version of a personal narrative and also completes a research paper.

As I designed my syllabus after looking at other beginning writing community college syllabi. This syllabus analysis helped me make critical and informed decisions about my own work. The chart below came to be because I was wondering what type of assignments and assessment would be appropriate to include on my syllabus. Using the four syllabi from my analysis, I came up with the following. I think it's interesting to note that the only two types of writing required by all four syllabi were some type of personal narrative and research project. I was surprised that only one syllabus actually provided a grade for revisions as well. I think that a grade may legitimize revision in students' minds and can be an invaluable part of the classroom experience. I know that I plan on grading at least one student revision.

While my syllabus includes a Research paper, it does not include a literacy narrative. Instead, I include personal writing in the form of multiple reflections. The reflection process culminates with an End of the Semester Portfolio project in which I encourage students to think about their writing process and themselves as writers.
